About Ally Fraser

I’m a furniture maker and sculptor working with reclaimed materials and found objects to create functional and sculptural pieces that challenge how we see the world around us. My work explores themes of waste, consumerism, environmental responsibility, and the emotional weight objects carry. I believe waste is a verb, not a noun—what we discard says more about us than we realise.
I embrace low-tech, DIY techniques in my practice-born from a childhood where asking for help wasn’t an option. That experience taught me self-reliance, but also gave me a deep sensitivity to abandonment, neglect, and the quiet stories held in forgotten things. When needed, I collaborate with skilled fabricators to bring certain pieces to life at the level I envision.

After nearly two decades in Sheffield, I now live and work in Falmouth, Cornwall—another place where industry meets nature. No matter the place, I’m drawn to overlooked, abandoned materials—each with a story, a history, and a beauty often ignored. Whether it’s old wood, corroded steel, or broken furniture, I see value where others see waste.

Now, as I prepare to become a father, practicing and sharing my art has taken on a deeper significance. It’s a way for me to continue healing from my own upbringing—and to be a more present, emotionally attuned father to my daughter than I had.
Though I’ve been making things my whole life, only recently have I fully embraced my identity as an artist. While I’ve built furniture for clients for over 15 years, much of my artwork has lived privately—until now. My piece Meshlight—a lamp made from a concrete gatepost and perforated steel—was recently exhibited at the 2025 Work–Leisure exhibition at Yorkshire Art Space in Sheffield.

Outside the studio, I’m a drummer, homebrewer, avid cook, and lover of the outdoors. You can find me sailing, hiking, or seeking out the next great stout or single malt.
